Future workshop and conference announcements

4-ICC, University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand

Preliminary announcement for 4ICC (4th International Conference on Combinatorial Mathematics and Combinatorial Computing) 15-19 December 2008 (summer) .

The ICC is held every 10 years. This year it includes the annual ACCMCC meeting of the Combinatorial Society of Australasia, and the New Zealand leg of the map conferences held annually in Slovenia/Slovakia/Arizona-Portugal/New Zealand.

Pre-ICM, International Convention on Mathematical Sciences

The Pre-ICM Convention will take place at the Department of Mathematics, University of Delhi, Delhi, India, on December 18-20, 2008.

International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) meeting is held once every 4 years in different parts of the world and the forthcoming ICM is to be held in 2010 in Hyderabad, India. On the initiative of Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, an activity cell to organize "India Mathematics Year 2009 (IMY2009) as Pre-ICM activity" has been set up in the Department of Mathematics, University of Delhi. To launch IMY-2009, we are organizing: Pre-ICM International Convention on Mathematical Sciences (ICMS2008) at the Department of Mathematics, University of Delhi during December 18-20, 2008.

The academic programme of the convention will include activities like workshops, symposia, brain-storming sessions, panel discussions, group discussions, seminars, poster sessions, tutorials, compact sessions etc. on various topics of mathematical sciences including interdisciplinary aspects.

AMSI, theme program on Group Theory, Combinatorics and Computation in honour of Cheryl Praeger's 60th birthday.

The AMSI theme program on Group Theory, Combinatorics and Computation will take place at The University of Western Australia, Perth, Australia, on January 5-16, 2009.

The first week will be an international conference in honour of Cheryl Praeger's 60th birthday while the second week will be an informal week consisting of short courses, workshops and problem sessions, especially beneficial to early career researchers and postgraduate students.

Registration is now open with early bird registrations closing on the 31st of October.

CATS 2009 --- Computing: The Australasian Theory Symposium , Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand

The 15th CATS symposium will be held at the Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, during January 20-23, 2009. CATS is one of the two premier annual conferences in theoretical computer science in the Asia-Pacific.

IPM 20-Combinatorics 2009

Conference covering all branches of combinatorics, especially combinatorial designs, graph theory and algebraic graph theory.

The IPM 20-Combinatorics 2009 Conference will take place at the School of Mathematics, Institute for Research in Fundamental Sciences (IPM), Tehran, Iran, on May 15-21, 2009.

The Institute for Research in Fundamental Sciences, IPM, will be celebrating its 20th year in operations in 2009. The opportunity is unique and there is an ample need for another comprehensive international conference on discrete mathematics in 2009. The objectives of the conference are to gather all interested individuals in the area of strengths of IPM in combinatorics to hear about the latest developments and activities and to nurture an atmosphere of cooperation between different educational institutions in or around Iran which are active in the area of combinatorics. With the ever increasing applications of discrete mathematics in communications, digital engineering, computer security etc., and an emerging group of young and talented mathematicians in the past decade, IPM has become a major center of research in combinatorics in the Middle East. There have been four successful international workshops at IPM related to different aspects of discrete mathematics in the past eight years. IPM 20-Combinatorics 2009 is expected to be the most comprehensive one.

Recent news of CMSA members and others

UWA Research student publication prize to Dr. Geoffrey Pearce

For the best student publication accepted for publication in 2007 in the physical or mathematical sciences or engineering.

For his paper: "Transitive decompositions of graph products: rank 3 grid type", (with John Bamberg and Cheryl E Praeger), J. Group Theory 11, 185-228. doi: 10.1515/JGT.2008.011 Published on-line March 2008.

Geoffrey will graduate with his PhD on September 11.


UWA New postdoctoral appointments to Tomasz Popiel, Sukru Yalcinkaya, Alice Devillers and John Bamberg.

  • Tomasz Popiel has started on a 1 year Research Associate position
  • Sukru Yalcinkaya will arrive on August 11 to take up a 2 year Research Associate position
  • Alice Devillers will arrive on September 24 to take up a 3 year Research Associate position
  • John Bamberg will take up a 3 year Research Associate position in May 2009.


Professor Anne Street was invited to visit Europe and the U.S.A.

Visits include: Koc University, Istanbul, for invited talk about joint work with Marks Nester on An Introduction to Balanced Sequential Arrays on the Square Grid. 2008 Italian combinatorics conference, Costermano, Italy for invited talk on Combinatorics: the first 4000 years. Department of Maths and Stats, Auburn University, Alabama, visiting Curt Lindner.


The Australasian Journal of Combinatorics

The web page for the Australasian Journal of Combinatorics is at http://ajc.maths.uq.edu.au/.

The Journal is now published three times per year, in February, June and October. CMSA Members are entitled to a $10 discount per volume.

There is a search facility for past authors and for keywords in the titles of papers. Instructions to authors are also available at this web site.

The contents of all volumes, 1 to 41, are listed at the above web page. We also now have free public access to the full papers in Volumes 1 to 29 inclusive. All but the last four years are available for free.

Submissions to the Australas. J. Combin. may be sent to ajc at maths.uq.edu.au. Electronic submissions are encouraged. For paper submissions, please check the web page.
